17 - Emergency Intervention
Screen 17: Emergency Intervention
When a person is injured or ill, he or she may become a danger to self or others. When this happens, the person may need some form of intervention in order to keep everyone safe. This issue is most common in mental health facilities, but it could come up in other settings due to illness or injury. For example, someone who was injured in a car accident may act in ways he or she would not act if not injured or someone with a serious illness might also act in ways that are not normal for that person. If their behaviors create a dangerous situation, health care providers may have to use an intervention to address the emergency. In this section, you can think about and decide which interventions you feel most comfortable with. If you have been in this situation before, you probably know what has worked for you and what has made the situation worse. Identify your preferred intervention first, then think about what should happen next if the first intervention doesn't work or is unavailable. Then you will have the option to give reasons for your preferences if you like. This is a good place to give useful information to health care providers about why you prefer certain interventions and not others. Finally, you will be asked if you have experienced a traumatic event in your past that makes certain interventions physically or emotionally harmful for you.
