13 - Visitation and Notificati
Screen 13: Visitation and Notification
If you are ever hospitalized and cannot communicate your wishes about visitors and cannot tell your doctors to call your friends and family, the doctor and facility is in a tough situation. They may know that you need your family or friends, but they cannot give out information about you and your admission to their facility because of confidentiality laws. If there is an emergency and someone needs to make decisions, the facility will try to find your next of kin, but what if you don't want your next of kin notified? Maybe you'd rather notify a friend or other family member. You may even have certain people that you would not want to know about your admission or visit you at all. You can put these preferences in your advance directive. You can specify the person or people the hospital should notify when you are admitted and you can give specific instructions about visitation. You can also give your agent the authority to make all visitation decisions. If you are able to make your own decisions, you would also make visitation decisions-this is only for those times when you do not have the capacity to make or communicate your wishes.
